18. WILLIAM⁵ ABERCROMBIE⁴⁰⁵ was born on 17 Jul 1777.⁴⁰⁶ He married Agnes "Nancy" Black (see #19) on 24 Jan 1799.⁴⁰⁷^,⁴⁰⁸ He died on 5 May 1813 at Seige of Ft. Meigs, Ohio, at age 35 during the War of 1812.⁴⁰⁹
William may be the son of Robert Abercrombie, a British soldier captured at Boston during the Revolution, but research is inconclusive. The similarity in the naming pattern between William's family and Robert's family is noteworthy. He and Agnes "Nancy" Black migrated to New Richmond, Clermont Co., OH, circa 1800 from Pennsylvania.⁴¹⁰ He was appointed judge at New Richmond, OH, in 1803.⁴¹¹ He and Agnes "Nancy" Black acquired twenty acres of land at Muddy Creek, Clermont Co., OH, in 1806.

After the massacre of Kentucky volunteers at the River Raisin by Indians allied with the British during the War of 1812, there was a wave of enlistment in Kentucky. William volunteered in Captain William Sebree's Company, Boswell's Regiment (10th), Kentucky Detached Militia, on 6 Mar 1813. Abercrombie accompanied his unit to Ft. Meigs which was under the command of Gen. William Henry Harrison. The fort was beseiged by the British and he was among the relief expedition that raised the seige. In a counterattack outside the fort, his company was cut off and he was probably among the seventy men killed by the British and their Indian allies. Their burial site is marked now as Kentucky Hill in Perrysburg, OH.⁴¹³^,⁴¹⁴^,⁴¹⁵^,⁴¹⁶^,⁴¹⁷^,⁴¹⁸^,⁴¹⁹

He was also known as John Metcalfe III.⁴⁷⁵ He enlisted in McAllister's Virginia Men, Continental Line, Fauquier Co., VA, on 27 Aug 1781 and was appointed an Ensign (Second Lieutenant).⁴⁷⁶ After the war he migrated with his father, other families and their slaves to Fayette County, KY. He became a prominent man and his half-brother was a Governor of Kentucky and a United States Senator.⁴⁷⁷ He was a member at the Transylvania Academy, Kentucky, in 1792 as an early subscriber.⁴⁷⁸ He was elected Trustee of the Town in 1799 at Paris, Kentucky.⁴⁷⁹ He was listed in the 1810 Census at Paris, Kentucky, Revolutionary War Soldier; 8 in family.⁴⁸⁰ He was in military service on 31 Oct 1812 in Major James V. Balls Squadron, Bourbon Co., Kentucky, under Captain William Garrard in the War of 1812. Discharged 31 Dec 1812 with frostbite.⁴⁸¹ He and Gov. Thomas Metcalfe cared for Sarah Dent in her old age before 1855.⁴⁸²

He was also known as "Colonel" David Morgan.⁶⁰⁹ He enlisted in the 14th Regiment, Continental Line, VA, in 1777.⁶¹⁰ Achieving some wealth in Virginia, he migrated to Floyd County, Ky in 1799 where he became a prominent land owner. He was related by marriage to other prominent men in the county.⁶¹¹ He was in military service on 10 Dec 1805 in the 56th Regiment, Kentucky "Cornstalk" Militia, as Lieutenant Colonel. The militia got its name from the fact that it was so ill equipped, men drilled with cornstalks instead of rifles.⁶¹² He was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature in 1810 at Floyd Co., Kentucky.⁶¹³ In 1813, Ed Osborn incurred a debt with Morgan secured by land and slaves. When Morgan went to collect, Osborn turned on him and killed him with a knife. He then turned on Morgan's son William and killed him too. Osborn fled, but was captured in a few days. Allegedly Osborn escaped from jail and took up a new life in Ohio. Osborn's family believed he was taken from the jail and secretly lynched.⁶¹⁴
