He was also known as James Flud.⁶⁰⁵ Nothing has yet been discovered about the origin of James Flood. Floods had been in Massachusetts since 1632, but James' connection to them has not been established. He and Abigail Thomas were members of the First Church, Falmouth, Maine, in 1752.⁶⁰⁶ He enlisted in Capt. John Land's Seacoast Company, Maine, on 20 Jun 1775 discharged 31 Dec 1776.⁶⁰⁷^,⁶⁰⁸ He lost his home when Royal Navy Capt. Mowat burned Falmouth in October 1775, value 36 Pounds. Mowat's action horrified the world.⁶⁰⁹^,⁶¹⁰ Little is known about Flood after the Revolution. A family historian and tradition say that he was the sheriff and disappeared mysteriously, last seen crossing the Tukey Bridge with a large sum of money. Foul play was suspected. There is no record that he was sheriff, but he did serve as constable and hog reeve (animal control officer).⁶¹¹^,⁶¹²

He was a Minuteman during the American Revolution and enlisted in Col. Phinney's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia. "He was a very impulsive man, caring little for consequences. At the time when Col. Phinney's Regiment was called into Falmouth [May 1777], in consequence of Capt. Mowat's ship [HMS Caneaux] being in the harbor and about to burn the town, Lombard accompanied his neighbors, the Gorham men, as a volunteer. The ship lay some distance from the landing - Lombard had what he thought to be an extraordinaryly good gun, and wished to try it. Accordingly, getting as near the landing as he could conveniently, and not be seen by those on the ship and screening himself behind a hogshead, he let go from thence at the sentry as he passed the gangway, and the ball hit directly at the feet of the man, in the side of the ship. Some of the officers reached over and with a knife took the ball from the place where it hit, and in a few minutes the ship was worked to a safer distance."
According to a patriotic historian writing a century later, "Calvin Lombard of Gorham fired the first gun at Falmouth Neck. It was not the one heard round the world, but it has been ringing in our ears ever since. He was inspired to the act by the spirit of liberty, not Coulson's rum, as that was not flavored with rebellion." However, an eyewitness wrote in a letter at the time that Calvin was "raised with liquor." Captain Mowat burned Falmouth to the ground, an act which horrified the world.⁶⁸⁷^,⁶⁸⁸^,⁶⁸⁹^,⁶⁹⁰

His nick name was William the Old Ranger.⁹¹⁰ He ran away from home in England because of his stepfather. He stowed away on a ship and after being discovered, he was sold at Cape Cod in 1737 for his passage.⁹¹¹
He enlisted in the Regiment of Rangers in 1757 during the French and Indian War. He was present at the English surrender of Fort William Henry to the French. The British and the colonists were permitted to leave the fort with their arms, but the Indians who were allied with the French broke the truce and attacked the retreating column and many died. William and Zephaniah Harding were captured by two Indians, but they escaped. Chased by the Indians, they hid in a hollow log. The Indians suspected where they were hiding and attempted to burn the log, but it was too wet. The Indians gave up and went away.⁹¹²
He moved circa 1760 to York, Maine, purchased 38 acres of land from John Freeman. He built first a log cabin and then several years later a two story house.⁹¹³ A man of the strictest honor and integrity. He is said never to have paid but twenty cents in interest, so careful was he never to be in debt.⁹¹⁴ He was the owner of taxable property on 27 Apr 1799 at Gorham, Maine.⁹¹⁵
