He was also known as Gottfried or Gotfret. A sailor, he was captured by Turks in the Mediterranean Sea and they took him as far as Jerusalem and then released him. He returned to Germany and went to sea again, this time as part of a fleet bound for South America. He was shipwrecked and rescued by a English warship. The English pressed him into the Royal Navy and then he learned he would be required to fight against his own country (England was almost constantly at war with Europe in those years). When the ship arrived at Kip's Bay, New York, he slipped into the water and swam ashore. He made contact with Mr. DeLancey (a prominent colonist) who found use for his knowledge of ship's rigging and ropemaking. Col. Caleb Heathcote backed his ropemaking business. He prospered and settled in Mamoroneck in 1709.⁷⁰⁹ He was a ropemaker in 1710 at New York.
