Elsie grew up in mill towns in northwest Wisconsin with six brothers.
12 In the 1890s, she and the rest of her family fled a disastrous forest fire by jumping into a nearby lake.
13 She was employed at Bruce, WI, as an elementary school teacher in 1910.

In 1912 she moved to Montana with her parents where they built a farm. She homesteaded land and taught school. She married Frank Romuald Wilma, son of Ignatz Wilma and Anna Agatha Potratz, on 10 Aug 1915 at Malta, Montana.
8 After marriage, she and her husband farmed on her homestead near Wagner, Montana for five years.
When they proved the land, they sold out and moved to Washington settling in 1923 in Kelso.
15 During World War II, Elsie resumed her teaching career to help with the labor shortage and she continued after the war until she retired.
