19. WILLIAM6 SAXTON (George, #23)

496, 497, 498 was born circa 1730 at White Plains, Westchester Co., NY. 499 He married Jane Jones (see #20) circa 1755 in Westchester Co., NY. 500 He died on 26 Nov 1791 at White Bay, Digby Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. 501, 502
Before the American Revolution, most of this county, north of New York City, was owned by a few families in English-style manors. Rents were low and leases were long. He leased 313 acres from John DeLancey (prominent patriot) with a house and barn "for three lives, his was the third life" and was ran a grist mill in 1775 at White Plains, NY. The farmers were quite satisfied with the system and were unwilling to declare independence from England.
503 William was loyal to the King and he signed the Freeholders' Protest against the Declaration of Independence. When Loyalists were being arrested by the Rebels in February 1777, he fled to the safety of British lines. Later he was imprisoned by the Rebels and kept at his own expense. His property lay generally behind the American lines, but both American and British forces robbed him. 504, 505, 506, 507, 508, 509, 510, 511He and Jane Jones migrated to Nova Scotia in September 1783 from New York with the Loyalist Refugees by order of Sir Guy Carleton. 514, 515 He filed a claim with the Crown for loss of his home and 313 acres in Westchester Co., NY on 31 Jan 1784 at Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada. 516, 517 Today the land in New York is called Saxon Woods Park.

20. JANE6 JONES 533 was born circa 1730 at NY. 534 She married William Saxton (see #19), son of George Saxton and (--?--) Ogden, circa 1755 at Westchester Co., NY. 535 She died at Digby Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. 536
She and William Saxton migrated to Nova Scotia in Sep 1783 from New York with the Loyalist Refugees by order of Sir Guy Carleton. 537, 538

21. ALEXANDER6 HAINES (Joseph Hains, #25) 539,540 was born in 1733 at Westchester Co., NY. 541, 542 He married Clarine C. Purdy (see #22), daughter of Caleb Purdy and Hannah Brown, before 1765 at Westchester Co., NY. 543, 544
He was a farmer in Harrison's Purchase, Westchester County, NY. His property was confiscated by the State of New York because of his loyalty to the King. 545 "Grandfather Haines owned three hundred acres of land on Long Island. The property at the present time would be worth millions of dollars. He was a captain in the British army during the revolutionary war. Captured by the Americans, he was handcuffed and condemned to die, but owing to the smallness of his hands, he was able to throw off the handcuffs and escape to Boston. From there he made his way to Nova Scotia. His lands were confiscated, and his family followed him to Nova Scotia (Haggan Papers)." 546, 547, 548 In jail as he could not pay his debts due to the fact that his property was confiscated. 549 He and Clarine C. Purdy immigrated to Digby Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, in May 1784 from New York aboard sloop Shoulderham. 550, 551 Alexander Haines sold property to Rev. John Saxton lot 83 on St. Mary's Bay, 112 acres at Annapolis (later Digby) County, NS, Canada, on 27 Nov 1787. He made a will on 7 Jun 1811 at Digby Township, Nova Scotia, Canada, John Saxton named executor. 552
