According to family tradition, he immigrated to Canada circa 1800 to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. He and a friend walked to the Niagara Falls area where local Indians gave them shelter. 240 Peterson was of German extraction and may have been part of a migration of to Canada of Pennsylvania and New York Germans. He prospered in Canada and, by the 1850s, he had acquired an estate with several pieces of property in the Niagara Falls area. 241 He was listed in the 1851 Census at Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co., Ontario, Canada. 242 He made a will on 7 Nov 1859 with an estate of $7,000. 243, 244, 245

13. LT. COL. ALEXANDER4 SAXTON (John, #17) 301,302,303,304, 305 was born on 16 May 1800 at St. Mary's Bay, Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, He was raised in a community of Loyalist refugees in Nova Scotia. He migrated with his parents to Upper Canada (Ontario) in 1810. 306, 307 He married Elizabeth Saunders (see #14) circa 1824 at Bayham Twp., Ontario, Canada. 308, 309 He married Harriet McConnell on 29 Jan 1846 at Bayham Twp., Elgin Co., Ontario, Canada, 2nd. 310 He died on 7 Aug 1872 at Port Burwell, Ontario, Canada, at age 72. 311,312 He was buried in Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. 313
He enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Middlesex Militia, Bayham Twp., on 19 Jun 1826 and was commissioned Lieutenant. Ultimately, he became Colonel of the regiment. 314

"Alexander was one of the early harbor masters at Pt. Burwell. A man noted for his courage and fortitute under suffering is well illustrated by the following incident. One day while assisting in driving some piling in the harbor the pile-driver was inadvertently allowed to drop on his arm badly crushing it. He was taken to a doctor but refused to be given an anesthetic, saying he wanted to be able to watch the doctor sew up the wound."
